Recently, I've been falling in love with motocross! Especially freestyle. l really wanna take it up as a sport, but l have no clue where to even start or what to do. A lot of people say that l should not even bother because most riders have been riding since they were really young, and im 17. Going pro is out of the question since im too old for that, but still l can dream :)
Really, l just wanna ride and hopefully learn some tricks to have fun, but l have no idea where to even start or what to do.

Buy a cheap 4 stroke bike(around 200cc) and ride the hell out of it. Then after you master that move up to a better bike like a 125 2-stroke. The beater bike will probably see a few wrecks thats why it is a beater. Then start off on small jumps and work your way up to the big ones

l got started when l was 1 yr old . Guest you just can do it whatever is how you want to do it .just be carefull in not trying to play stupid cause nobody pay for stuns when not one is paying for then .

Find local tracks in ur area & go along on a few practice & race days to see how things work. http://wheretomx.com/

Ask a few questions while there as to what sections they would have available for u to race in & that will help u to discover what bike is best suited for you. You can also find out when the track is open for practice & other things that u need to do to be able to ride there.

So u can then get a bike & all the necessary gear for racing.

Do not attempt to race until u have had quite a bit of seat time on the bike & r used to having other bikes around you. Learn all the rules of racing & what all the flags mean so u know what to do when one is waved at you. See if u can find someone who will be prepared to ride with u so u can get starting practice & they can help lead u into jumps.

Go to a dealer & just find a bike that fits u comfortably, preferably a 4 stroke bike. Once you've found the right bike just ride it around in ur yard on flat ground. Get the hang of shifting gears & using the front & back brakes & leaning to turn the bike. Then, once you've mastered this, visit ur local track or find it on wheretomx.com, & ride with other people, this will make u a better rider. Ask the better guys there for advice & tips. Learning to jump is a big part of motocross. Start small, like a single jump. Learn how to stand up & handle the bike & throttle control when going over the jump, then move up to a small double. Soon u will be dedicated to one of the fastest growing sports in the US. As far as freestyle goes.you have a long way to go, but if u want it bad u will figure it out as u get more advanced on the bike. Also while u r at the dealer make sure u purchase all the proper riding gear, such as; helmet, gloves, goggles, boots. etc.. or find used stuff, makes it a lot more affordable!

You did not mention u height/weight. 4 stroke bikes r a lot easier to learn throttle control on. But depending on ur size u do not want to get a bike that is too big. l started on a Honda XR100 it is a trail bike & very easy to learn on, but sucks for jumping(too heavy)

l also do not know where u r but there r a lot of pros that do training courses to teach you. Usually if u contact a track near u they will be able to give u at least one person that gives lessons.

Finally u r never too old to learn to ride, l got on a motorcycle for the first time at 43 & started racing last year... l love it.

find a local track ( we drive as much as 2 hours) just go and watch. nothing says you cant race there are countles weekend racers that just go out for the love of the sport.you are never too old to start.. l met a guy who started riding in his 40s..

Just like Jake said get a smaller 4 stroke. Learn the feel of the bike. What l am trying to say is do not be influenced by other riders, start off simple (Do not try to be Ricky C) l work as a medic at a track I've seen people that ride over there heads trust me it do not work. Be careful.
